Whitehead is situated within the town of Carrickfergus, a large town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Carrickfergus sits on the north shore of Belfast Lough, about 11 miles (18 km) from Belfast, and is part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area. The town had a population of 28,141 at the 2021 census and is County Antrim's oldest town, with a history that includes Carrickfergus Castle, built in the late 12th century. The area is a townland of 65 acres, a civil parish and a barony, and was historically the administrative centre for Carrickfergus Borough Council before its amalgamation into the Mid and East Antrim District Council in 2015.
