Ainthorpe is a village that is part of the Danby Parish Group, a collective that includes the neighbouring settlements of Castleton, Westerdale, Fryup and Houlsyke. Residents benefit from the presence of the Danby Church of England (VC) school, which serves the local community. The area is situated within the postal district YO 21, indicating its proximity to Whitby. The River Esk, which flows through the region, empties into the North Sea at Whitby after a course of around 28 miles (45 km) through Eskdale. The name of the river is derived from the Brythonic word ‘isca’ meaning ‘water’. The Esk is the only major river in Yorkshire that flows directly into the North Sea; all other major rivers in the area flow into the North Sea via the River Tees or the Humber Estuary.
