This property is located in Rowde, a locality within the town of Devizes, Wiltshire, where the community is centred around the historic market town environment.
Rowde, Devizes lies in the postal district SN 10, within the historic market town of Devizes in Wiltshire, England. Devizes is a town that developed around Devizes Castle, an 11th‑century Norman castle. The town received a charter in 1141 and has a long history of involvement in key periods of English history. During the Anarchy, a 12th‑century civil war, the castle was besieged, and it was again besieged during the English Civil War when the Cavaliers lifted the siege at the Battle of Roundway Down. The Parliamentarian Army of the West under Sir William Waller was routed there, and the town remained under Royalist control until 1645 when Oliver Cromwell attacked and forced the Royalists to surrender. The castle was destroyed in 1648 on the orders of Parliament, and today little remains of it. The town’s history is reflected in its streets and public buildings, and its market heritage continues to be a focal point for the local community.
