It is located on the Hereford and Monmouth road, approximately three and a half miles north from Monmouth and eight miles south west from Ross. The parish extends towards the border with Wales and into Monmouthshire, and its postal address is in Wales, with Monmouth as its post town. The village should not be confused with other Newtons in the area, such as Newton in Clodock Parish near Longtown or Newton Leominister.
