Built in the eighteenth century as a shooting box, it was expanded by the Rolls family over three stages during the nineteenth century, with work by architects George Vaughan Maddox, Thomas Henry Wyatt and Sir Aston Webb. The house is Grade II* listed and now serves as the clubhouse for the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club. Its extensive gardens and landscape park, largely laid out by Henry Ernest Milner in the later 19th century, are also Grade II* listed on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. The estate lies some four miles (6.4 km) north‑west of the town of Monmouth and is part of the broader Monmouth district (NP 25).
