The village lies roughly six miles west south‑west of North Thoresby railway station and borders the parishes of Wold Newton, Thorganby, Brookenby, Binbrook and Stainton Le Vale. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 172, with an alternative figure of 194 recorded by Nomis that includes the nearby Thorganby parish. Swinhope does not have a formal parish council; instead it holds parish meetings to manage local matters. Historically, the area was a deserted medieval village, and while the remains were destroyed in 1969, crop marks still indicate the former settlement within the village grounds. The locality offers a quiet rural setting with close links to nearby villages and a small local community structure.
