In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 172, with an alternative figure of 194 recorded by Nomis that includes the nearby Thorganby parish. Swinhope does not have a formal parish council; instead it holds parish meetings to manage local matters. Historically, the area was a deserted medieval village, and while the remains were destroyed in 1969, crop marks still indicate the former settlement within the village grounds. The locality offers a quiet rural setting with close links to nearby villages and a small local community structure.
