Newent is a market town and civil parish in the municipal district of Forest of Dean, although it is not part of the "Royal Forest of Dean". The town is located 11 miles (18 km) north‑west of Gloucester. Its population was 5,073 at the 2001 census, rising to 5,207 in 2011, and 6,777 at the 2021 Census. Newent has a long history as a medieval market and fair town, with settlement evidence going back to Roman times. The first written record of the town appears in the 1086 Domesday Book. The locality of Oxenhall, as part of Newent, shares in this historical and rural character within the Forest of Dean district.
