According to the 2001 census, the population of the village was 379, indicating a close-knit community. The area’s history includes the North Devon and Cornwall Junction Light Railway, a railway constructed to serve numerous ball clay pits located between the London and South Western Railway’s Torrington branch, an extension of the North Devon Railway group, and Halwill.
