The town is the main settlement in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough and is administered by the local council. Historically, Merthyr is said to be named after Tydfil, the daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, who according to legend was slain by pagans at Merthyr around 480 CE. The name Merthyr is derived from the Latin martyrium, meaning a place of worship built over a martyr’s relics.
