Waitby is a small village and civil parish situated within the Westmorland and Furness Unitary Authority of Cumbria, England. The parish encompasses the villages of Waitby and Smardale, as well as the hamlets of Riddlesay, Stripes and Leases. The area lies in the farmed and enclosed northern part of the parish, with elevations ranging from around 200 m to 300 m. The southern half is predominantly heathland, largely unused for agriculture, and rises to Smardale Fell, whose heights reach between 300 m and 400 m. The civil parish of Ravenstonedale forms the southern boundary, while the western border with Crosby Garrett is defined by Scandal Beck. To the north and east lie the civil parishes of Soulby and Kirkby Stephen respectively. According to the 2011 Census, the population of the civil parish was less than 100, reflecting its rural character.
