The parish includes the village of Flimby and is situated on the coast of the Solway Firth. Maryport developed around a new harbour built at the mouth of the River Ellen in the mid‑18th century and the area contains the site of the Roman settlement of Alauna. The built‑up area had a population of 8,525 at the 2021 census, while the parish had 10,865 residents.
