Banbridge lies on the River Bann and the A1 road, and its name derives from a bridge built over the Bann in 1712. Historically, the town developed as a coaching stop on the road from Belfast to Dublin and later prospered through Irish linen manufacturing. It is part of the civil parish of Seapatrick and the historic barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half. Banbridge was the headquarters of the former Banbridge District Council, and following the 2015 local government reform it became part of the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. According to the 2021 census, the town’s population was 17,400, reflecting its role as a regional centre of commerce and community life.
